The Reds won a throw-in on the right, about level with the edge of the six yard box. Steve Heighway threw the ball back to Tommy Smith who took a small touch to control it.
Smith then whipped in a right-footed cross towards the penalty area and although it was missed by Brian Hall, it found an unmarked Kevin Keegan.

Although the ball was slightly behind Keegan, he controlled it forwards and as it sat up invitingly, he hit a powerful volley. Despite the best efforts of the keeper, the shot found the top corner of the net.

The move started with a huge kick from Ray Clemence. The clearance came down inside the opposition half and John Toshack, moving slightly towards his own goal, back headed the ball further upfield.

After taking a second touch on the edge of the 'D', Heighway cooly slotted the ball home across the keeper.

In a perfect example of Bill Shankly's fabled 'pass and move' philosophy, a seven man move involving eleven passes started when Ian Callaghan won the ball on the half-way line. It was moved to the right wing, swept across to the left and played back to the right before Tommy Smith exchanged one-two passes, first with Brian Hall and then with Steve Heighway.
Now at the by-line, Smith drilled a low right-footed ball across the six-yard box.

Kevin Keegan had stolen in and was unmarked at the back post. However, the keeper got the faintest of touches at the near post which almost took the ball away from Keegan. But he reacted instantly, stretched to his right and passed the ball into an empty net.
